Diaper rash can be a pain in the butt! Did you know that an under appreciated reason for diaper rash is delayed onset food sensitivities? Delayed onset food sensitivities are an immune reaction to food consumed that occurs hours to days later. The immune reaction creates skin irritation leading to a rash. The diaper rash is not the standard rash that responds to creams, lotions or ointments. Additionally, this is not the food allergy that you are probably thinking of right now. This is not a reaction to a peanut, shellfish, etc. that sends you or your child to the emergency room or that requires an Epipen injection. This is a reaction that is hard to put your finger on because of the time frame it takes to generate the rash of hours to days later whereas a true, food allergy manifests in minutes. The rapid manifestation of a true food allergy makes it pretty easy to determine a cause-effect relationship. Cause = You ate a specific food. Effect = You went to the emergency room. Delayed onset food sensitivities are therefore, much more difficult to identify.
